How do I assess hiking and mountain tours the right way?

Each of your tours needs an assessment about the level of difficulty and an assessment about the terrain. Anyone choosing your tour relies on you description. Sometimes it’s not that easy to stay objective. This is why we have collected a few hints that might help you assess your hiking and mountain tour the right way.

The points (1 to 6) are guide values which are adapted to the region. Therefore the standards of, for instance, landscapes and coastal regions considerably differ from alpine landscapes, but the points offer a good indication.

Difficulty

1 points: The tour is easy and manageable for everyone, even without having trained in advance. It takes its course on flat terrain without ascent and takes under one hour (without rests).

2 points: The tour is fairly easy and manageable without training in advance. It mostly takes its course on flat terrain without considerable ascent and it takes under two hours (without rests).

3 points: The tour is a bit demanding and requires a basic level of fitness. The track has ascents and descents and a duration of two to four hours (without rests).

4 points: The tour is moderately difficult and requires a good basic level of fitness. It takes its course over longer and steeper ascents and over a high difference in altitude. The tour takes between four and six hours (without rests).

5 points: The tour is demanding and requires a good level of physical fitness. It has long and very steep ascents and a high difference in altitude. It takes between six and eight hours (without rests).

6 points: The tour is very demanding and requires a very goof level of physical fitness. It has very long, extremely steep ascents and a very high difference in altitude and a duration of more than eight hours (without rests).

Technique:

1 points: The terrain is very easy and can be done without any specific training.

2 points: The terrain is mostly easy, requires surefootedness and can be done with little experience.

3 points: The terrain is diverse and rarely difficult. It requires surefootedness, basic knowledge of climbing and belaying techniques and previous experience.

4 points: The terrain is diverse and partly difficult. It requires surefootedness, knowledge of climbing and belaying techniques (firn and ice) and previous experience in steep terrain.

5 points: The terrain is demanding and often difficult. Specific training in advance, a lot of experience, a head for heights, a high level of surefootedness and knowledge of climbing and belaying techniques (firn and ice) are required.

6 points: The terrain is very demanding and mainly difficult. Specific training in advance, a lot of experience, a head for heights, a high level of surefootedness and knowledge of climbing and belaying techniques (firn and ice) are required.

Qualities

Experiential value:

1 point: In addition to the distance the tour offers few interesting sightseeing possibilities or nice resting places.

2 points: The tour offers few interesting sightseeing possibilities or nice resting places and has therefore a low experiential value.

3 points: The tour offers several interesting sightseeing possibilities or nice resting places.

4 points: The tour offers several interesting sightseeing possibilities or nice resting places and is diverse.

5 points: The tour offers numerous attractive sightseeing and resting places and takes its course along a lot of eventful and diverse highlights.

6 points: The tour offers a whole lot of interesting sightseeing and resting places and takes its course along innumerable eventful and diverse highlights.

Landscape:

1 points: The tour mostly takes its course through built-up areas and doesn’t offer physiographical highlights.

2 points: The tour often takes its course through built-up areas and offers few nice views and physiographical highlights.

3 points: The tour mostly takes its course through built-up areas and offers few nice views, but several physiographical highlights.

4 points: The tour often takes its course through nature offering a lot nice views and physiographical highlights.
