How do I plan a route in the app?

The Route Planner has been developed to function on iOS and Android devices in exactly the same way.

To get to the Route Planner, first go to the map in the lower left corner of the main menu. After this, tap on the green symbol representing a route in the upper right corner of the map itself.

Important: You can only use the Route Planner if you logged into the app using your Community login. If you are not logged in, you will be able to enter just two waypoints. This is because any route that is saved is linked to your profile.

Entering waypoints

You set individual waypoints by pressing and holding on the map. Alternatively, you can enter a location or an address for the waypoint in the list view. This can be found in the top top right of the map under "A,B,C". Select the chosen activity for your route in the lower left menu using the arrow for the drop-down menu. Use the two arrows in the middle of the menu to undo or restore the your last edit.

Routing with beelines

To use the "free routing" function, tap on the symbol at the bottom right of the menu. You will then see connecting beelines between the waypoints. Tap on the free routing symbol again to automatically 'snap' on the trail network,  You can find more information about "free routing" in the app here.

A 'plan' or a 'route'?

After you have set the waypoints, hit the "Save plan" button on the bottom right. It is at this stage that you can decide whether you want to save the route as simple "plan" or whether you want to use it as a "route". These are the key differences:

  • Plans form the base of a “route” and comprise only a title and track geometry. They cannot be published.
  • By contrast, a 'route' is made of of the track geometry as well as a title, description, detailed data, pictures, videos (if so chosen), etc. You can find out more about routes here.

The advantage of this two-step process is that it provides you with a useful and quick overview of where you are in the development of the route. You can also use this feature to create a simple interim plan when you are out and about and then edit it later in detail to create a route which you can then publish.

Adding a title, description, details etc.

Once you have entered all your waypoints, tap "Save" in the lower right corner. Give your route a title, a short description and upload at least one photo. You can, of course, choose to add more information, specify details and describe how to get to the route's starting point. The better maintained a route is, the higher its ranking will be and the more fun other community members will have!

Publishing your route

On the bottom you will see the "Publish" button, which you can use to make your route available to everyone. The green "Preview" button shows you how the route will look once displayed. Don't forget to save the route using the grey button on the left.

Pro and Pro+ users: On the bottom right of the map you will find a button that shows three squares, which represent the different map layers. As a Pro or Pro+ member, you can use this to select maps types other than OpenStreetMap. Furthermore, the trail networks for certain activities such as hiking or cycling can be shown on the map as well, thus making it easier to create your route.

Subscribed users, you can also display the contents of the "My Map" function directly in the Route Planner. You can find more information on how to use the "My Map" function here.
