Navigation: Which routes can I navigate along and how?

Navigate between points A and B with ease whilst also knowing your remaining time and distance, your speed and elevation, and the altitude of the route. The speech output that has been included is especially useful for when your smartphone is in your pocket or if you are traveling by bike.

How do I use the current version of Navigation in the app?

At the moment, Navigation works exclusively with the Route Planner and only with newly planned routes that have not previously been saved. This means that you cannot currently use Navigation for routes sourced using the Route Finder, or that are already listed under ‘My Routes’. You have to plan a new route yourself in order to navigate and you will also require an Internet connection.

Just so you know: we are working flat out on expanding and improving on all of this!

How to start Navigation

Step 1: Start the app and set your starting point by tapping and holding your finger on the map.

Step 2: Tap on ‘Start here’ and open the Route Planner. If prompted, confirm the pop-up on how to create routes using the Route Planner.

Alternatively, you can also start Navigation in the Route Planner itself. You do this by tapping on the green icon on the top right.

Step 3: You can set more waypoints by tapping on the map. Once you reach the location of the planned route, tap ‘Navigate’ in the lower left corner.

You have two options at this point:

  • Save the route plan and then start Navigation
  • Start Navigation without saving the route plan

During navigation, your current track will be plotted and saved. If you selected the first option and chose to save your route plan, both will be retained. Navigation, including the speech output, will now start.

The ‘Pause’ button at the bottom of the map allows you to pause, resume and stop the navigation at any point.

Navigation indicators and information tools

You will see a small arrow at the top of the screen that points down. Tapping on this will open a slider that displays the following information:

  • The remaining distance and time required to reach your destination.
  • Your current altitude.
  • The time you have already spent on the route.
  • Your current and average speed.
  • A graphic showing the elevation profile of the entire route. This is accessed by swiping from right to left across the slider.

Speech output

The speech output that has been integrated as a feature of Navigation means that your smartphone can stay in your pocket whilst you are on the route. The following languages are currently available: German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Romanian, Hebrew and Chinese.

 Some tips:

  • The language used in the app (and therefore also in the Navigation function) depends on the language setting of your device.
  • Please ensure you set the media volume of your device accordingly to get the best out of Navigation’s speech output.

Navigation and map material

Our app allows you to choose from and view different styles of map. Each of these styles is based on different sources of data, e.g. OpenStreetMap, official surveying bodies or Alpine clubs. The navigation information for each map can vary depending on the data set, which then either increases or decreases accuracy. This means the map style you choose has an impact on the quality of the navigation you get.

Navigation uses the data of the map you selected at the start. Whilst you can change the map style when navigating, this is not recommended as Navigation will continue to use the data of the map you selected originally. This means that the information you receive from Navigation might not correspond with the newly selected map.

Navigation's other features

You can zoom in on the map while navigating and change the orientation. If you stop for a longer break, the map will realign itself with your route. The screen will stay on during navigation unless turned off manually. If you are listening to music on your smartphone whilst also running Navigation, its volume will decrease during the voice announcements so that you are able to hear all the information.

Please note: The quality of your route planning can have a big impact on the quality of the navigation. If you set your waypoints inaccurately or on intersecting tracks, the system may not be able to assess the course correctly. Therefore, it is best to set waypoints in front of or behind intersections as opposed to directly on them.

How you can use an existing route in "My Map" as a planning template

Navigation does not work currently with pre-existing routes. However, to make the process of planning a route easier, you can use a route saved on 'My Map' as a template.

To do this, you first need activate "My Map" on the main map. Your listed routes will now be visible. Then you can plot the new route directly over the route you want to navigate.

More details about "My Map" can be found here

We are constantly working to improve all features and especially to optimize Navigation, which will be extended in the future to all tours, including those already saved.
